I&E Systems specializes in upgrading complex PLC and DCS systems on plants and offshore platforms. This work is often performed on live systems during full production. It demands 100% accuracy. The existing system documentation always has errors and omissions, which if not eliminated, pose an unacceptable risk to any upgrade. In the mid nineties we found that 70+% of our costs were drawing related. We were caught in a trap – if we did less drawing work we increased risk however high costs limited demand for our services. Further cost pressure came with the release of IEC 61508 which imposed new requirements for safety systems, a significant part of our work. At that time we were negotiating a large upgrade with tens of thousands of drawings. The cost of work on the existing and new drawings would have exceeded the project budget so the upgrade might not be approved. We felt that a software tool could reduce cost and improve accuracy. However all available packages simply automated the drawing activity and treated the information as if it were unimportant. As I&E Systems had both software and engineering resources we wrote our own software application. Using this we delivered the project 30% under budget. The client was so impressed that it purchased the package by then named DAD. We enjoy developing DAD: it is fascinating to experience the improvements on projects and see longwinded tasks become quick and simple. Development has now continued for 11 years. Our team has unmatched experience in this area. We have leant by patiently reworking the difficult issues, not by bolting on new "modules" to faulty code. We use DAD on our engineering projects which reduces project costs to clients and increases their satisfaction. This has resulted in a increased project workload which provides funding for DAD development. We support all previous versions. All earlier versions of DAD can be upgraded to the current. Despite limited marketing DAD has been sold widely.
